I enjoyed the below article about Freddie Mercury covering an Elvis song because there was an Orion song that was a cover of a Freddie Mercury song. The two seem to overlap. In fact, Freddie Mercury stated that he wrote his song as a tribute to Elvis.
Queen share rare 1975 footage of Freddie Mercury covering Elvis Presley’s ‘Jailhouse Rock’
5 December 2023, 10:35
Queen knew how to rouse an audience.
The operatic rock band, fronted by the imitable Freddie Mercury, could control a crowd like no other band in the history of rock music.
We’re all aware of his “ey-oh” exploits which became world-renowned after Queen‘s now-legendary performance at Live Aid, which stole the show and solidified the band as one of the greatest ever.
Not only was it Freddie’s endless on-stage charisma that engaged audiences however, it was also the band’s conveyor belt of classic anthems that had crowds gripped.
It was a sure-fire bet that after 1978, Queen would finish their concerts with either ‘We Will Rock You‘ or ‘We Are The Champions‘.
Prior to then, the four-piece would consistently call time on their shows by covering a rock ‘n’ roll classic.
Queen would play Elvis Presley‘s timeless 1957 number ‘Jailhouse Rock’ for the encore of their concerts, as Freddie called the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll one of his foremost influences.
Now, in the latest episode of YouTube series, Queen: The Greatest Live, they’ve unearthed rare footage of them performing the song from a gig in 1975.

Queen The Greatest Live: Jailhouse Rock (Episode 42)
The cleaned-up, recovered footage shows Queen giving it some serious welly, performing ‘Jailhouse Rock’ during a concert at London’s Hammersmith Odeon on Christmas Eve in 1975.
Freddie was a lifelong fan of Elvis Presley, having first heard his music whilst attending boarding school in Bombay during the 1950s.
Recalling in Freddie Mercury: A Life, In His Own Words (Mercury Songs Ltd), the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘ composer admitted it was Elvis who encouraged him to pursue music in the first place.
“When I was little I was in the choir and I just liked to sing. I would copy Elvis Presley songs, then I suddenly realised that I could actually write songs and make my own music – call it a natural gift, or whatever.”
So it was fitting that his future band would rile up the crowd for the final hurrah at their shows with the raucous ‘Jailhouse Rock’.
Roger Taylor recently reflected on their encores, admitting: “On Jailhouse Rock, we could go a bit mad…”, and the proof is in the pudding here, with Freddie stripped down to his pyjamas by the looks of it.
In 2021, Brian May said: “I think it’s impossible to have been a kid at that time and not been influenced by Elvis.”
“Freddie in particular though, of course. He was one of Freddie’s great heroes. For me, his guitarists were a great inspiration. Scotty Moore was one, James Burton the other. So, yeah, Elvis was definitely an influence.”
There was a clear influence from Elvis Presley in Queen’s magnetic stage presence, but it filtered into their music too.
In 1979, Freddie wrote ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love‘, which was a direct tribute to Presley in the wake of his tragic death two years earlier.
“It’s Freddie’s tribute to Elvis in a way,” Brian confirmed recently. “Freddie was very fond of Elvis.”

Queen – Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Official Video)
Around the time ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ came out, Freddie said he even styled his vocal performance on Elvis.
“My voice does sound a bit like Elvis Presley’s on ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’. That wasn’t something I was trying to do, naturally, it was pure coincidence.”
It’s all sung rather low, so then you sooCrazy Little Thing Called Loven come close to Elvis, especially with such a 50s-type song.”
I don’t mind telling you that my girlfriend thought it was a cover song, but that is absolutely not true. I wrote it… while taking a bath,” he casually admitted, saying he wrote the US number one hit within ten minutes.
Below is the Orion recording of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love“. Listen closely and see who you think this is singing! Below also is a portion of my article regarding the album on which “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” was included from my page of documentation about Elvis and Orion the singer and Orion Pictures Corp. (see link to my Orion page below)
Below is my favorite of the Orion albums. By that I mean the albums that were released straight out as being Jimmy Ellis Orion. There are some really great songs on this one. I do believe that you will recognize the voice of Elvis on some of these songs…Long Tall Sally for instance.

I believe that there are impersonators in videos singing this song as though Elvis himself had performed this song…however, we know their performances are lies because Freddie Mercury did not write the song until 1979…two years after Elvis left.

My long-time good friend Deb O. shared the links to the two below videos of the documentary “Elvis Found Alive”. I have not watched these two versions. I did watch a little of one of them and I see that it is slightly different from the original which I own on DVD. Joel Gilbert has accosted me in the past and lied to me that the man in his video and on the CD by Elvis is not Jesse. Jesse responded to me when I told him about Joel Gilbert and Jesse said “Gilbert is a damn liar.” I agree with Jesse.
My friend Deb commented that she expects I get new people to my site who have not viewed this video. I am sure that Deb is right and so below are the two links which Deb shared with me.
My sincerest thanks to Deb for sharing these links with me for us all to enjoy.
Just remember that it is Jesse speaking and singing but it is NOT Jesse sitting in the chair throughout this video. Jesse was reading a script.
Please visit the links which I have included below as the images are not live links to the videos. I will not air the actual videos on my site because of my earlier encounter with Joel Gilbert (the liar).

Just want to let everyone know a little current update about Jesse. I do understand that my visitors are concerned because I have not gotten to speak with Jesse for over a month. I have been very concerned myself.
I have been in touch with our go-between during this time and he has heard from Jesse. Jesse is doing pretty well.
He tried to call me the day before yesterday but was unable to get through because we had changed our phone number. We have been in the process of changing our service provider for our Internet and house telephone. We were told that we could keep our same phone number which we have had for over 43 years. After the switch took place, we learned that they had changed our number. I have been back and forth with the old provider as well as the new provider…they have both been looking into the problem. We may decide to just keep the new number. The biggest problem with this situation is that neither Jesse nor our go-between had our new number until yesterday.
On top of all this, Jesse is still having problems with his phone and has been trying to get a new phone for some time. Because of the special situation with his phone protecting his safety and privacy, it is not a simple matter of going to Walmart and getting a new phone the way most people do.
The good news is that Jesse is alive and he is going to be all right…to quote our go-between.
As always, I will post news when I do get to speak with Jesse.

My good friend Chris McC sent the below photo to me with his comment “I think that’s about the coolest “rock” photo ever taken….” I agree with Chris and thank him so much for sharing.
This photo appears to have been taken during the same show from which Jesse’s chosen photo for the front of his book was taken. Jesse said he wanted his photo used on the cover of the book and that it was unpublished at the time he sent it to his co-author.

I may be mistaken about it being the exact same show…but it is from the same time frame…but I want to share the below anyway.
The below photo is a copy from my personal copy of the rough draft of the book.

Elvis Presley’s Cousin Reveals the 1 Christmas Gift That Went Straight Into His Upstairs Office
Elvis Presley‘s cousin, Danny Smith, discussed how Christmas was celebrated at Graceland. He maintained that the holiday season centered more on family and friends than flamboyant gift-giving. However, there was one gift that Elvis liked so much that it went straight upstairs to his private suite of rooms.
The King of Rock and Roll and the 1 Christmas gift that went straight into his inner sanctum
On his Memphis Mafia Kid YouTube channel, Danny Smith discussed purchasing Christmas gifts for Elvis. “Believe it or not, we bought him your normal stuff. One year, we were excited because we bought him a new recliner.”
“It was upstairs in his office,” he continued. “He kept it up there and used it.”
Despite Elvis’ legendary generosity toward those closest to him, Smith maintained that the Memphis Mafia gave Elvis gifts that were “normal” family presents.
But, while Elvis always enjoyed getting gifts from family and friends, he loved sharing his wealth even more. Smith admitted, “Elvis always loved to give rather than receive.”
However, there were times when Elvis did like to receive gifts. Particularly when they were as well thought out as one gift Linda Thompson bestowed on the King of Rock and Roll on Christmas Day.
Linda Thompson also surprised Elvis Presley with a gift he didn’t expect
In a YouTube post depicting her first Elvis Week, Elvis Presley’s ex-girlfriend Linda Thompson discussed one Christmas gift that shocked and delighted the King of Rock and Roll. Thompson told fans about the Maltese Cross she gifted Elvis, which included diamonds and their shared birthstones.
“I gave him the Maltese Cross, which he always wore in his shows. It was during our second Christmas together,” she explained.
“Not knowing that Elvis never did anything for himself, he would never indulge himself as much as he indulged others, I went to Lowell Hayes and told them I had this design for a beautiful Maltese Cross,” Thompson said.
She continued, “I went back to Graceland and said, ‘Honey, I want to buy you a nice Christmas present. But that means you’ll pay for it.”
“He said, ‘OK, how much are we talking about?’” and I said, “$25K. He said, ‘$25K?’ and I responded, ‘Yes, now doesn’t the real price of $8K sound better?”
“I got him the cross, and he absolutely adored it. He wore it to every show,” she concluded.
What was Christmas at Graceland like?
The official Graceland website shared even more details about how Elvis Presley spent his Christmas holidays at home in Memphis, Tennessee. “Elvis loved Christmas. It was his favorite time of year. The Presleys always put up their Christmas decorations early, and because Elvis so loved the season, decorations stayed up through his birthday on January 8.”
Traditionally, Graceland utilizes the same decorations purchased by Elvis when he lived there. These included Santa and his sleigh, a Nativity scene, and aluminum Christmas trees.
Eventually, the company Graceland leased the Nativity scene, and aluminum trees from each year went out of business. Graceland purchased the displays to ensure the continuation of Elvis’ holiday tradition.
Graceland’s traditional Christmas decorations include two Christmas trees in the living room and dining room, poinsettias on the staircase and throughout the house, and decorations in the Pool and Jungle Rooms.

I am so sorry that I have not gotten to speak with Jesse for so long. Our go-between and I have been speaking often and he tells me that Jesse is alright. He and his people have been trying to get a new phone set up for him. There have been some technical difficulties with the new phone. As I have posted before, his is not a standard phone and so it is much more complicated than a new phone is for the rest of us. I take comfort in hearing that he is doing alright as that is the most important thing for me.
I am mailing my weekly package out to Jesse this morning because of the postal holiday next Monday.

Elvis Presley’s Legacy Celebrated with ‘The Original Musicians of Elvis’ Tour

The spirit of Elvis Presley, the enduring ‘King of Rock-‘n’-Roll,’ reverberates through generations, kept alive by ardent fans and tribute artists. As we approach Elvis’s birthday on January 8th, tributes to the legendary musical icon, who would have been 89, intensify. Among those keeping the tradition alive is Dennis Jale, a prominent Rock-‘n’-Roll artist from Austria, with his tour ‘The Original Musicians of Elvis.’
Elvis Legacy Kept Alive
One of the highlights of this homage tour is a performance at the Amstetten Pölz-Halle on January 25th. Adding an authentic Nashville touch to the evening will be Donna Kay Presley, Elvis’s cousin. The show promises to take attendees on a journey through the golden age of Rock music, with a lineup featuring hits and anecdotes from the era.
A Star-Studded Cast
The tour boasts of musicians who have had the honour of performing with Elvis either on the road or in the recording studio. This list includes names like Glen D. Hardin, Terry Blackwood, Ginger Holladay, Donna Rhodes, Craig Morris, and Paul Leim. Music enthusiasts might also be treated to a performance by guitar maestro James Burton, who served as the lead guitarist for Elvis and established the renowned TCB Band.
Amstetten’s Symphonic Show
A unique feature of the Amstetten leg of the tour is the ‘Elvis Symphonic Show’. This has been expertly arranged by TCB pianist Glen Hardin. The local ‘Amstettner Symphonic Sound Orchester’ will lend their talents to this symphonic experience, creating an unforgettable evening for all attendees.
In conclusion, the ‘Original Musicians of Elvis’ tour offers a rare opportunity to relive the magic of Elvis Presley, while the Amstetten performance provides a unique blend of Rock-‘n’-Roll and symphony that promises to be a truly memorable experience.

Elvis Presley liked to eat at the 81 Club Restaurant located at 81 N Second St in Memphis.

The reason was the restaurant owner, Lil Thompson.
“Elvis would come in and say,
‘Mama Lil, if I play the guitar for you, would you give me a quarter?’
Lil recalled.
And she would always reply, “No, but I’ll cook you a cheeseburger”.
After Elvis’ stardom, she proudly remembered Elvis an evening years later at her Western Steakhouse and Lounge at 1298 Madison Avenue.

Near closing time, Elvis’ friend George Klein called and asked if Elvis could eat at the restaurant.
“Give us an hour to get there,” George said. About an hour later, Elvis’ group of about twenty friends and girlfriends arrived.
Lil waited tables and her husband Tommy cooked. The party stayed for a couple of hours, enjoying the food and each other’s company.
When Elvis finally got up to leave, he asked Tommy how much he owed them. “Son, you don’t owe us anything ” Tommy replied.

Shortly after the party left, Elvis called. “Look in the back of the telephone directory,” he said mysteriously.
Lil found five hundred dollars hidden there.
“I really loved Elvis ” Lil said years later. “I’ve buried a son and a husband, but the saddest thing of my life was losing Elvis. When that hearse drove out of the gates of Graceland, it liked to killed me, it was so sad”.
In the late 1990s, the Western Steakhouse and Lounge was demolished.

This is not new to my site but may be new to those visitors who have not been on my website for the full last 14 years.
