I have a bit of Jesse news by way of our go-between, who called me. I am sad that it is not very good news. Jesse has not been well for the past 2 or 3 weeks. He had a stroke at 5:00 AM, and his nurse was there and told Jesse what had taken place. It is not a severe stroke, and he said that he will be all right. It did affect the right side of his face and his speech. Jesse did attempt to call me last night…but the phone disconnected before we could speak. I believe that he did call just so I would see the caller ID and know that he is thinking about me.

I know everyone will be keeping Jesse in their thoughts and prayers.

I thank my good friend Chris McC. for sending me the below email with this interesting article about the upcoming Elvis film by Baz Luhrmann.

My heartfelt thanks to Chris, as always.

“This is a different project, I think, than the one I sent you to show on Netflix in September…”

Elvis + Baz = EPiC: Everything we know about Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis Presley film

John Beifuss, Memphis Commercial Appeal
5 min read

“EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert.”

That’s the title of director Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming movie — a title both obvious and brilliant, with an acronym so inevitable it’s a shock nobody thought of it before.

Here’s what we know so far about the project, which if nothing else offers more evidence that Elvis — who died almost 50 years ago — has never really “left the building.” (You can find him and his music in movie houses right now, referenced throughout Disney’s new live-action “Lilo & Stitch,” which in just two weeks of release has become the second biggest box-office hit of 2025, behind “A Minecraft Movie.”)

We’ll use Elvis song titles for this story’s “chapters.”

‘Memories’

In 2022, Australian director Baz Luhrmann released his sixth feature film, “Elvis,” an inventive and, yes, epic biopic about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The movie was a hip-shaking runaway hit, grossing close to $290 million at the worldwide box office and earning eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Austin Butler, who was propelled to stardom).

Shot over the course of a year in Australia, the film’s production was grueling, and had been preceded by years of research that included multiple trips by Luhrmann and his staff to the Graceland archives and other Elvis sites. Nevertheless, Luhrmann, after the release of “Elvis,” almost immediately began teasing plans for an Elvis documentary, to make use of the extensive footage and audio he uncovered that had not previously been seen or heard by the public.

Elvis Presley Enterprises managing partner Joel Weinshanker confirmed that Luhrmann was working on a second Elvis film during an Elvis Week panel discussion at the Graceland Soundstage in 2024. “I probably really shouldn’t say that,” Weinshanker cracked, after letting the cat — or “Hillbilly Cat,” to cite one of Elvis’ 1950s nicknames — out of the bag. “Oops — sorry, Baz.”

Later, it was revealed that the documentary would be a project of Sony Music Vision; Bazmark, the company founded by Luhrmann and his wife, designer/producer Catherine Martin; and a new production company, Authentic Studios, an offshoot of Weinshanker’s Authentic Brands Group, which licenses “likeness” rights for such celebrities as Marilyn Monroe and Muhammad Ali.

ELVIS AT 90: Decade-by-decade milestones in the life — and afterlife — of the King

‘The Titles Will Tell’

Luhrmann announced that his new Elvis film will be titled “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” on May 29 — first on his Instagram account, then onstage at the Sony Music Vision “content showcase” in Los Angeles, an event that also touted such upcoming projects as a Barbra Streisand documentary and a concert tour film about the rock band Oasis.

Also on Instagram, Luhrmann shared a brief montage of Elvis-in-concert footage. “During the making of ELVIS, we went on a search for rumored unseen footage from the iconic 1970s concert films Elvis: That’s The Way It Is and Elvis on Tour,” he wrote, in a May 30 Instagram letter to fans. “I had researchers go into the Warners Bros. film vaults buried in underground salt mines and, to the astonishment of all, we uncovered 68 boxes of film negative, as well as unseen 8mm footage. It has taken two years to restore the footage to a quality that it has never been projected at previously, while the team had to meticulously claw back sound from the many, unconventional sources that were also unearthed. One of the great finds has been unheard recordings of Elvis talking about his life and his music.”

Luhrmann said the film will weave “never-before-seen footage” with “iconic performances that have never been presented in this way, from the 1970 Vegas show, on tour in 1972 and even precious moments of the 1957 ‘gold jacket’ performance in Hawaii. Most importantly, Elvis will sing and tell you about his life in first person, through both classic and contemporary musical prisms.”

‘This Is the Story’

Director Baz Luhrmann greets the media during a red carpet event before the screening of "Elvis" at Graceland in Memphis on June 11, 2022.
Director Baz Luhrmann greets the media during a red carpet event before the screening of “Elvis” at Graceland in Memphis on June 11, 2022.

So, Luhrmann is crafting the definitive Elvis-in-concert documentary, eh? Not so fast.

On Instagram, the director wrote that “EPiC” is “not specifically a documentary, nor a concert film.” In an interview with the entertainment website, Deadline, he added: “Our aim is to make something new in the Elvis canon.”

“EPiC” will “bring something to the screen that befits the magnitude of Elvis as a performer but also offers deeper revelations of his humanity and inner life,” Luhrmann told Deadline.

Sonically speaking, the director’s reference to “classic and contemporary musical prisms” on his Instagram post suggests the film could contain radically remixed Elvis recordings and diverse covers of Elvis songs, much as the biopic “Elvis” incorporated hip-hop and other post-Elvis forms into the soundtrack, to suggest the timeless nature and continuing influence of Presley’s music.

‘What Now, What Next, Where To’

Wrestling those 68 boxes of footage and all the rest of the tape into feature film form will be a formidable if fascinating challenge for Luhrmann and editor Jonathan Redmond (who was Oscar-nominated for his editing of “Elvis,” and also edited Luhrmann’s 2013 version of “The Great Gatsby”). It seems certain that Luhrmann — an advocate of the big-screen, big-sound experience — will insist that the movie receive a theatrical run before it becomes available for home viewing, but no release date has been announced. Our bet would be late 2026 or 2027, to tie the movie in with the hoopla that will accompany Graceland’s recognition of the 50th anniversary of Presley’s death on Aug. 16, 1977, at the age of 42.

I have some good news today. Jesse continued trying to speak with us on the phone last night after attempting to call us twice last week. He called two times and said a few words to Tom and to me. But evidently, “they” had placed some sort of recorded device on his phone line, which became activated once he spoke. It made me so very happy just to hear his voice, even though the noisy recording ended our connection. I’ll be hoping that he can correct the problem and call again very soon.

Below is a fascinating video shared with me by a good person, Galen P. I know everyone will enjoy viewing this. I have been watching various versions of this account by Nancy Rooks, who was one of the maids at Graceland and was someone with whom Elvis enjoyed talking.

I thank Galen very much for sharing this video with me, as it is the best version that I have watched. Galen has been supportive of my site for a long time.

Before I close out this article, I have a recollection of my own that I want to share. Many years ago, my very good friend called to tell me that he had been listening to George Klein on his show and that George had said something very interesting.

George shared an experience of his own that really struck a chord with me and has stayed in my stash of memories. George said that he had been out shopping and ran into Nancy Rooks, and that they sat and visited for some time. He said that she told him something that was so important to him that he had written it down in detail and placed it in a lock box, which was not to be opened and read until after George died.

I have not heard of anything of this type being made public since George has been gone…I wonder if it was ever found by anyone who recognized the value of his secret.

New Elvis Presley box set coming in August: Everything we know about ‘Sunset Boulevard’

Memphis Commercial Appeal

The music Elvis Presley made in Los Angeles during the 1970s is the focus of a new box set.

On June 13, RCA Records and Sony Music Entertainment announced “Sunset Boulevard,” a “definitive 5-CD collection chronicling Elvis Presley’s recording sessions and rehearsals at RCA’s legendary Los Angeles studios.” It will be released Aug. 1.

The set — which features 89 tracks, half of which are previously unreleased — offers a new look at Presley’s ’70s output. The collection’s first two discs (which will also be released on their own, as a special 2-LP “highlights” set) feature new stripped-down mixes from four-time Grammy winner and Memphis producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang.

“Sunset Boulevard” will be released Aug. 1, 2025.

Ross-Spang, who is based out of the Southern Grooves recording studio in Crosstown, has worked closely with RCA/Sony and the Elvis estate for more than a decade on a series of archival projects.

In a release detailing the project, the label said “Sunset Boulevard” will include alternate studio versions of late-period gems like “Separate Ways” — widely seen as the most autobiographical song Elvis ever recorded — “T-R-O-U-B-L-E,” which channeled the groundbreaking signature vocal style from his earlier years, and “Burning Love,” the 40th and final Top 10 single of Presley’s career. A previously unreleased version of “Burning Love – Take 2” was made available as part of the announcement.

The set, which opens with the Ross-Spang mixed material, features 17 classics from throughout Elvis’ time in RCA Studio C, including material from the era’s greatest songwriters: Kris Kristofferson’s “For The Good Times” (a 1972 b-side first released in 1995), Paul Williams’ “Where Do I Go From Here” (from 1973’s “Elvis”), Billy Swan’s “I Can Help” (from 1975’s “Today”) and Don McLean’s “And I Love You So” (also from “Today”) among them. Ross-Spang’s stripped-down mixes equally bolster the 17 studio outtakes that comprise the set’s second piece.

“Sunset Boulevard” will be available in 5-CD and digital formats, and the package will feature rare archival photographs, as well as new liner notes from music historian Colin Escott, plus an introduction by Presley’s longtime friend Jerry Schilling. The 2-LP “highlights” edition, with newly mixed studio recordings and outtakes, will also be available in August, in a special Graceland Exclusive Color Variant.

The release of “Sunset Boulevard” will also be celebrated at Elvis Week 2025 in Memphis. Sony Music will host a listening event at Graceland’s Guest House Theater on Aug. 13, featuring a Q&A session on the project with special guests.

I found the article below very interesting and informative. I hope my visitors will enjoy it and the new video.

A new short film starring Riley KeoughElvis Presley’s granddaughter, offers an emotional and intimate tour of Graceland that brings the iconic home back to life. The Memphis mansion feels lived-in and vibrant, echoing the days when the King walked its halls. This powerful tribute moved Elvis’s greatest love to speak out, saying that seeing Graceland come alive again stirred some deep emotions.

Keough debuted a snippet of a short film titled IN PROCESS: RILEY KEOUGH on her Instagram page. The full video is available on YouTube.

This film is part of a documentary series offering an intimate look into the creative process of filmmaking. Keough is featured along with Lucy BoyntonRuth Negga, and Nia DaCosta.

Presley’s granddaughter steps in front of the camera for Chapter I: Writing, offering a rare glimpse into her creative process. As she reflects on her journey as a writer, she also appears in scenes filmed throughout Graceland, which served as her childhood home away from home.

The emotional impact of seeing Graceland come to life moved Presley’s longtime partner, Linda Thompson, to share a heartfelt message in the comments section of the post. “This tugs at my heart,” she wrote.

“The memoir you co-wrote with your beautiful mama was gut-wrenching, exquisite, and such an honest and affectionate tribute to someone I loved very much…. Lisa Marie [Presley]. Keep being the authentic, gorgeous human you are!”

In a voice-over, Keough shares the moments and memories that spark her creativity as she takes viewers on a journey through Graceland, including the backyard, pool area, jungle room, kitchen, stables, the bedroom of Gladys and Vernon Presley, the pool room, TV room, and living room. “The locations were real. The people were real,” she says.

“It was just a very human story set in an unusual place. But for me, it’s the most usual place in the world.”

Linda Thompson lived at the historic Tennessee home with the king of rock and roll from 1972 through 1976. She was responsible for many of the home’s now-iconic details, designing the stained glass peacocks leading into the music room, the climbing roses and “P” stained glass at the front door, and decorating the downstairs rooms and the Jungle Room.

Below is the taped phone conversation Elvis had with Gail Giorgio in 1988. I know I have shared this before, but there may be new visitors who have not heard it. Or there may be others, like me, who enjoy hearing the really important things again.

I do know for an absolute fact that this was Elvis speaking with Gail because Jesse told me so. He was disappointed in Gail and told me,I thought I could trust her.” Gail had been told before Jesse called, “We trust you won’t tape the call,” but she did.

Collingwood, Ontario – Elvis Festival

Every summer, the town of Collingwood transforms into a rock ‘n’ roll haven as thousands of Elvis impersonators and fans descend for the Collingwood Elvis Festival. From hip-shaking performances to themed parades, tribute contests, and street parties, it’s a dazzling homage to the King. The energy is infectious, the costumes are over-the-top, and the love for Elvis is alive and well north of the border.

Marion was a very special lady and a good friend to Elvis.

Her name is Marian Cocke. Not a celebrity. Not a Hollywood name. But when Elvis Presley needed comfort, when he needed loyalty, when the spotlight faded and the pain kicked in, he asked for her. She wasn’t just his nurse. She was his witness. His confidante. And on the night before he died… she was the last person he reached out to. This is not a tabloid story. It’s not scandal or conspiracy.
