I want to share with everyone that Jesse called me this afternoon. He sounded wonderful and we had a cheerful and enjoyable phone visit. He is doing well but has still been having trouble with his phone. He has been all right from the biopsy which he had about 2 weeks ago so I am so thankful for that. As always, hearing his voice certainly did light up my afternoon.

This is a “sweet” article related to Elvis and his enjoyment of peanut butter and banana sandwiches. By the way, Jesse still really likes Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups…he mentions this treat every once in a while when we speak.
The Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Banana Cream Treat Inspired By Elvis

Once upon a time, there was a delicious tale of a treat that rocked taste buds. It was 2007 when the suspicious minds at the Hershey Company decided to pay homage to none other than the King, Elvis Presley, and his favorite sandwich, the peanut butter and banana. Thus, 30 years after the musician and actor’s death in 1977, Reese’s Peanut Butter & Banana Creme Cups were born.
With a hunk-a-hunk of chocolate love, the collector edition ridged cups hit grocery store shelves like a sensation sweeping across Graceland. Each bite was a mesmerizing melody of flavors — a smooth dance of banana creme filling embraced by subtly gritty peanut butter and milk chocolate as delicate as a pair of blue suede shoes. It was an edible serenade and consumers were all shook up with delight. Elvis, the man who couldn’t help falling in love with the medley of peanut butter and banana, likely would’ve probably curled his lip in approval. The confectionery wizards had truly created a wonder, and the short-lived status just made it all the more tantalizing. As a fun bonus, one lucky buyer even had the chance to win a 1957 Cadillac.
The PB&B cups made a grand entrance but, much like Elvis himself, they left the stage too soon. Mere months after their grand introduction, Reese’s Peanut Butter & Banana Creme Cups quietly exited the market, seemingly leaving candy aisles a little less thrilling.
Fans clamor for the cups’ return
Creativan/Shutterstock
Despite their short lives on shelves, these heavenly bites didn’t leave the hearts of enthusiasts. In an attempt to resurrect the icon (the candy, that is), a petition began to circulate online, asking the brand to bring back the Elvis-inspired product. Fans made it clear that they still possess a burning love for the famous combination. Reese’s apparently responded to the claimant, “There’s always a chance you’ll get to enjoy this perfect combination again as we do on occasion bring back limited editions. A lot of factors go into making these decisions, including the feedback we get from our fans. We’re glad to hear it was a fan favorite, and we’ll be sure to add your vote for its return!”
To many, there’s still hope that these legendary banana-infused candies might make a comeback. The active petition gathers signatures like fans at a rock ‘n roll concert. In that way, the memory of the sweet, salty, unforgettable indulgence lives on. Like Elvis himself, they may have left the building, but they’ll forever be in the hearts of fellow peanut butter and banana aficionados. Over the years, the chocolate brand’s portfolio has been adorned with various finite and seasonal treats, but Reese’s Peanut Butter & Banana Creme Cups have remained the sugary delight some folks still dream of, like a record on heavy rotation. Thank you, thank you very much, Reese’s, and of course, Elvis.

I really enjoyed the below article about Elvis and a Johnny Carson joke. Hats off to Mr. Dennis for sharing his first-hand discussion with Charlie Hodge about this story.
Clever Journeys
Simple, Honest, Freedom, and Fun.
Johnny Carson’s Toilet Paper Joke Even Fooled Elvis Presley

In 1976, Charlie Hodge, a devoted friend of his boss, Elvis Presley, lost a bet with me. I became the victor after enough rounds of pinball against each other at the Hickory Log restaurant across the street from Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee.
If I won, he had to tell me (as President of the Texas Chapter of the Elvis Presley Graceland Fan Club and a young university journalism student) a story about Elvis he had never told before. He laughed at the bet as we started taking turns filling our quarters into the pinball machine slot.

I barely won. He was such a good sport that he also bought hamburgers and drinks for us after the “tournament.”
Charlie began with a loud laugh as we took our seats at a table. This is what he told me per how I published it.
A few years prior, during the night, Elvis called down from his bedroom upstairs to summon Charlie, who lived downstairs.
“He wanted me to run up to the store and buy a bunch of toilet paper,” Charlie sparkled, recalling the event.”Get all you can get.”
It actually wasn’t that much of a surprise because “there was really nothing that shocked me anymore about what or when Elvis wanted something,” he grinned. “I thought maybe we were going to toilet paper a house or something because this was one really odd order.”

Charlie laughed so hard he had to wipe his eyes, trying to tell me the story.
“He’d been watching the Tonight Show, and Johnny announced something about a severe toilet paper shortage spreading across the country. Elvis didn’t want to wait. I guess his competitive nature kicked in and wasn’t waiting the next day, but wanted us to beat everyone to the punch before they woke up and found out.
“Sure enough, a couple of us went down the street and bought all the toilet paper we could fit in a pickup.”
“Elvis was sure relieved,” Charlie grinned. “But we had plenty of toilet paper to go around.”

I published this story in the Texas Fan Club Newsletter, Flaming Star, in late May of 1976. I’ve only seen it published one other time, by the late Paul Lichter, who I wrote for in his Memphis Flash magazine.
Legendary late-night talk show host Johnny Carson was known for his quick wit. He was constantly making jokes, but one joke, in particular, went on to have serious repercussions.

In December 1973, Carson thought it would be funny to report that there was a national shortage of toilet paper. Some viewers didn’t see the humor in this and took it seriously, running out to stock up on toilet paper.
This panic buying from his viewers spread across the country, even at Graceland, resulting in his joke actually becoming a reality.
The shortage that resulted from this prank had manufacturers and shops placing a ration on toilet paper until the rumors stopped spreading. It caused so much chaos that Carson was forced to make a public apology.

Even the New York Times commented on the prank, saying it was a “classic study” of how gossip is spread.
One thing no one could have foreseen from this prank gone wrong was one portable toilet company trying to get on the bandwagon. Taking advantage of Carson’s popularity, they named one of their toilets “Here’s Johnny”, which was the famous phrase that Carson walked on stage to for his show.
Carson was not going to let his catchphrase be used without consent, and especially not for this kind of product. He sued the company, claiming he had the rights to the phrase “Here’s Johnny”.
It was no easy process, however, with the ensuing court battle going on to last ten years and two appeals. The court eventually ruled in Carson’s favor, prohibiting the company from using this phrase in their marketing or signs. Despite the ruling, Braxton, the toilet company, is still trying to reclaim the name for their use.

After Carson’s death in 2005, comedian Steve Martin said, “every one of us who grew up watching Johnny Carson enjoyed 30 years of going to bed happily. He loved to make people laugh, he loved to laugh, and he loved entertainers and comedians.”
“His casual naughtiness and boyish demeanor made the country a better place to live in. He enriched this nation for sure,” Martin noted.
Fellow talk show host Jay Leno also had kind words for the late Carson, stating, “nobody has ever made an impact on television as great as Johnny. Johnny was definitely the gold standard.”

There is a copy of Jesse’s book for sale on eBay for anyone who has been looking to buy one. This book looks like it has not been gently handled…but someone may wish to bid on it since it is starting at a fairly low bid price compared to some of the closing prices at which the books have been going.
I am a little dubious of this seller as it is obvious that they have not read the book due to their lack of adequate description of the contents of the book.

I thank my friend Chris McC who shared the below rare article about Elvis from his high school days for us all to enjoy. I have never seen this before and really like it because it is Elvis way before he became “ELVIS” to the world.

My best friend MJ shared this wonderful video with me to share here for us all to enjoy. I have not seen this one-time-on-stage performance of the song “Where No One Stands Alone” before. This is truly magnificent!
This was such a heartfelt choice of song by Elvis for the heavy load of heartaches with which he was dealing. Also, please note that he chose to perform this exactly 6 months to the day before he left on August 16, 1977. Jesse has said that they left a lot of clues…
Below is just one of several notes in this vein that Elvis wrote during one of his later nights performing in Las Vegas.
Where No One Stands Alone – Elvis Presley [Live]
A live recording with vocals and piano from Elvis Presley at his concert in Montgomery, Alabama on February 16th, 1977.
“Where No One Stands Alone” is a beautiful gospel song that Elvis recorded at the legendary RCA Studio B, Nashville, Tennessee in May 1966 for his Grammy award-winning album “How Great Thou Art”, released in 1967.
This live recording, exactly 6 months before his death aged just 42, is one of the most poignant moments on stage in Elvis’ career. From nowhere, Elvis decided to sit at the piano and perform this old gospel number for the one and only time on stage. Totally unrehearsed, it appears that his band and backing singers either couldn’t remember the song or didn’t know it at all. Elvis launches into an impassioned effort, despite his failing health, and delivers a performance and lyrics that strike a resonance with his current situation that is impossible to ignore.
With his life and career seemingly slipping away from him, Elvis seemed a broken and lost man, a victim of his own unprecedented success. The only place he knew to turn to was God, and that night, on that stage, he sang his heart out, in a cry for help.

My best friend MJ shared the below article with me and I am so glad that she did. I must read this new book as it appears that it will show the true story of Col. Parker and Elvis. There are so many misconceptions about their friendship and business association. It is very sad that so many people have a negative view of Col. Parker.
Jesse has spoken with me about Col. Parker with nothing but appreciation and respect. He told me that he did not know what he was going to do when Col. Parker died. They were close up until that day.
A fresh biography of legendary entertainment manager Colonel Tom Parker, with a contrarian and corrective point of view.

Books: “Elvis and the Colonel,” Greg McDonald’s Inside Look At “Greatest pairing in entertainment history”
Elvis and the Colonel: An Insider’s Look at the Most Legendary Partnership in Show Business
By Greg McDonald and Marshall Terrill
St. Martin’s Press; hardcover, 384 pages; $32.00; available today, Tuesday, November 28th
Greg McDonald is an entertainment producer who got his start in show business with Colonel Tom Parker, and they knew each other for almost four decades. As a teenager, McDonald drove the Colonel around Los Angeles when his top client, Elvis Presley, was making movies in Hollywood, spent time with him when Elvis began his residency in Las Vegas, traveled with him when Elvis hit the road when he started touring again, and worked with Parker at his home office in Palm Springs, California.
McDonald went on to manage Ricky Nelson for seventeen years, ran Sonny Bono’s mayoral and congressional campaigns, and was president of Transcontinental Records, which had the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and O’Town. To this day, McDonald manages Colonel Tom Parker’s show business assets, including his name, likeness, and image.
The new book, Elvis and the Colonel: An Insider’s Look at the Most Legendary Partnership in Show Business, is McDonald’s attempt to set the record straight on Colonel Parker, a largely misunderstood figure in Elvis’ life. This is a contrarian and corrective view on a man who was truly a trailblazer who had a long, strong, warm and complex relationship with Elvis.
The imagined lore is that Parker took advantage of “poor country boy” Elvis to sign the singer who became “The King.” A lot of this, McDonald contends, comes from a lack of knowledge of their business and personal relationship. These are never-before-hears stories of Parker’s collaboration with Elvis that reveal the man behind the legend and the strategies that made Elvis a commercial groundbreaker. Parker had such a lasting impact on the music industry that many of the practices he established are still used today.
A lot of this book is devoted to the real life story of Colonel Tom Parker, which gets lost in the image of a balding, rotund man with steely eyes and a knowing grin, who was always outfitted in a blazer, buttoned-down shirt, and porkpie hat.
Andreas Cornelius van Kuijk was born on June 26, 1909, in Breda, Holland, a small, bustling seaport village near the North Sea, in the southern region, and his parents were hardworking people who struggled to make a living and feed their nine children.
From an early age, Andreas was captivated by the circus, as he liked clowns and acrobats, but what won him over was the animals, especially elephants. Eventually, he would go by himself and volunteer, lending a hand with chores with the animals. More than anything, he discovered a love of show business, and he soon began creating tents out of newspapers and charging neighborhood children the equivalent of a penny to witness his “backyard circus.” There were songs, acrobatics, and a special show with trained beetles, a goat, and a crow named Blackie.
When Andreas found his way to the United States, he jumped a train in Huntington, West Virginia, and he was looking for work and came across a small carnival. He was fascinated by American horses because they were much smaller than what he was used to back in Holland. He introduced himself to the owners of Parker Pony Rides and told them about his experiences handling animals, and he was hired on the spot.
Eventually, he was traveling the country with the Parkers, traveling from city to city in the South, setting up small concessions in any location they could find, including self-service grocery stores, which were ideal locations since parents took their children with them while they shopped.
The Parkers took a liking to the hardworking and personable Andreas and decided to adopt him. When they went to a courthouse in the small Georgia town where they were working, they filled out the necessary paperwork.
Thomas Andrew Parker was his new name, which he thought fitting since this was his new life in a new country. He chose his first name after his distant cousin, the clown, and his middle name is the Amrricanized version of his given first name, plus the surname of his new parents.
When the United States was involved in World War II in the early 1940s, Americans were stuck home listening to war news on the radio and trying to figure out how to survive with little gasoline, meat, coal for heat, and other necessities.
There was virtually no entertainment, which is where Tom Parker entered the picture. In 1943, he left the Hillsborough County Humane Society and became the road manager for Pee Wee King, a songwriter, bandleader, and country recording artist. Parker also managed Gene Austin and Eddy Arnold, and booked personal appearances for Ernest Tubb. While he liked working with famous people, he realized he did promotion really well. The marketing concept he developed in his carnival days translated very well to promoting country stars. As he did with circuses, he would travel ahead of the show, arranging publicity, hanging posters, and setting up ticket sales.
It would be a decade before he would see Elvis Presley perform for the first time in concert, on November 24, 1954, at the Municipal Auditorium in Texarkana, Texas. Elvis was nineteen years old, and was becoming a sensation in the Deep South after Sun Records released “That’s All Right,” “Good Rockin’ Tonight,” and “Milkcow Blues Boogie.”
Parker saw that Elvis was a singular performer, as his music was being played on Memphis stations that catered to rhythm and blues and rock ‘n’ roll, basically music meant for them, not their parents. He knew that Elvis, who was managed at that time by Memphis disc jockey Rob Neal, was about to break out of his Deep South base and could be an international phenomenon with the right push and a little time. Neal saw that Parker could be the one to take Elvis to the top, and Elvis saw a businessman who knew what he was doing.
McDonald writes in this excerpt, “What history and countless other books on Elvis Presley don’t tell you is that Colonel Parker was the first mega-manager who made forays into today’s multimedia world of music, film, television, publishing, and Las Vegas-style entertainment. Parker, along with his once-in-a-millennium star, Elvis Presley, blazed many paths in the span of two decades. Elvis (the artist) and Parker (the enigmatic manager that made it happen behind the scenes) were the greatest pairing in entertainment history.
Though the Colonel may have appeared to many to be shrewd, flamboyant, crass, and brash, in actuality, he was fair-minded, loyal, funny, a twenty-four seven workhorse, a man whose word was his bond, and even philanthropic in private. Many of Presley’s artistic endeavors had a charitable aspect to them thanks to Colonel Parker’s prompting. The two men provided major support – through financial contributions and raising awareness – for several charities throughout their two decades of success, including the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii, March of Dimes, the Salvation Army, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the Kui Lee Cancer Fund. Colonel Parker was also a lifelong animal lover and even once worked for the Humane Society in Tampa, Florida.
Colonel Parker was sure to give fans, concert promoters, and business clients their full value while at the same time leaving them wanting more. Conversely, he got his client the best possible deals for the maximum amount of money. He was getting Elvis nearly $1 million a movie and 50 percent of the box office net when the biggest stars in Hollywood might have gotten 10 percent at most. Colonel Parker got those extraordinary deals because of his savvy and smarts. He was also strategic and Zen-like in his feats: getting his client the maximum deal while saving enough gravy for those who sat across the bargaining table from him.
Others wanted his services too: the Beatles. Frank Sinatra. George Hamilton. Ann-Margret. Tony Orlando. Tanya Tucker. They all wanted Colonel Parker to manage them. I remember when one of the Beatles (I believe it was Paul McCartney) called the Colonel at his Palm Springs home shortly after the death of Beatles manager Brian Epstein in late August 1967. He took the call, excusing himself to another room. After he got off the phone, he said he couldn’t take them on because of his loyalty to Elvis. It was a testament to his greatness as a manager that the Beatles wanted him. The fact that he turned them down was a testament to his belief in his client.
All business dealings were done with military-like precision and secrecy. Parker kept his mouth shut for several reasons. What he concealed was far more astounding and complex than has ever been revealed. Although an uneducated Dutch farm boy who grew up in a modest apartment above horse stables, he had an innate knack for creating a spectacle and weaving the public’s heart and soul into it. The Nashville music scene, Hollywood, and Las Vegas were not going to be a match for him.
Before he got to the top, Colonel Parker rode the rails as a hobo, sailed around the world in the merchant marine, served four years in the United States Army, and spent a decade as a traveling carny perfecting his act. He understood human behavior and learned how to squeeze a nickel out of all of it, making him the perfect power behind the entertainment throne.”

Tonight at 10:00 ET is when the Christmas special at Graceland will air. Below is an article detailing the show once more. I can’t wait to see this. We have our DVR all set to record it.
Exclusive: The War and Treaty Say It’s a “Humbling Experience” Performing on ‘Christmas at Graceland’
The spirit of Elvis Presley will come alive with the new holiday special Christmas at Graceland, which features an array of artists across genres performing beloved songs from Presley’s esteemed catalog. Among the many artists who are honored to perform is The War and Treaty, the husband-and-wife duo of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter. They’re part of an A-list lineup that features Post Malone, Lana Del Rey, John Legend, Kacey Musgraves, Lainey Wilson, Alanis Morissette, and Kane Brown.
“Graceland is historic all year ’round. However, during the Christmas season, the mansion comes alive with a mesmerizing sparkle,” The War and Treaty tells American Songwriter in an exclusive statement. “The holiday special is not merely a time of celebration, but a chance to honor the enduring legacy of Elvis Presley as well as preserve the essence of Elvis’ festive spirit. We can embrace the magic of Christmas and enjoy the timeless allure of Graceland.”
The Grammy-nominated couple will be performing a groundbreaking song from Presley’s career, “If I Can Dream.” Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.’s history-making “I Have a Dream” speech, the song was written by Walter Earl Brown and recorded by Presley in the wake of King’s assassination in 1968. The song touches on themes of hope and unity as Presley passionately sings, There must be peace and understanding sometime / Strong winds of promise that will blow away the doubt and fear / If I can dream of a warmer sun / Where hope keeps shining on everyone.

“Elvis radiated a divine presence, a spirit that was unmistakably touched by God,” the duo rave, adding that they’re looking forward to performing “If I Can Dream” at Graceland and embracing “what the song stands for.” “He possessed an undeniable essence that permeated every aspect of his being.”
Tanya says her first memory of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is when her mother played his version of “How Great Thou Art” off his 1967 album of the same name. She cites “That’s All Right” as her favorite Presley song, while her husband calls “Love Me Tender” his favorite. They also agree that his renditions of “Blue Christmas,” “Santa Claus Is Back in Town,” and “White Christmas” are “synonymous with the holiday season.”
Each of the artists will perform live from inside the Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee, marking the first time a televised concert will broadcast from the estate. Viewers will also get to see never-before broadcast footage of Presley. The special is produced by actress Riley Keough, daughter of the late Lisa Marie Presley and granddaughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. Keough became the sole owner of the Graceland estate following her mother’s death in January 2023.
“In our wildest dreams, we never imagined that we would find ourselves standing on the hallowed grounds of Elvis’ estate, let alone performing the very song that altered the course of his career,” The War and Treaty professs. “It is a surreal and humbling experience to be a part of Elvis’ dream, to champion the causes he fought for, even in the face of adversity.
“We carry the torch of his legacy, a legacy built on love and music, with the utmost honor and reverence,” they continue. “It is a privilege to continue his mission, spreading his message of unity and joy through the power of song. Elvis’ spirit lives on through us, and we are forever grateful to be a part of his enduring legacy. In the words of Elvis, ‘When you can’t say it, sing it.’”
Christmas At Graceland airs live on Wednesday (November 29) at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. It will also stream on Peacock.
